For hardware, Dell and Hewlett-Packard are the leaders. Apple and IBM, the minor players, are the ones who started the personal computer trend. Lenovo, a Chinese company, bought IBM’s personal computer operation. Cisco Systems is the leading maker of network gear for the Internet. I believe that someday very soon, Apple is going to become the leader of hardware, passing Dell and Hewlett-Packard.
For software, Microsoft dominates personal computer operating system software, including word processing and web browsers. Software is becoming an important component of electronic commerce by being bought and downloaded over the Internet. Most software is becoming freeware or shareware.
